RUTH | chapter three | FINDING REST FOR YOUR SOUL
RUTH | chapter three | FINDING REST for Your Soul
We’ve all been there—those seasons when life feels heavy. Anxiety, fear, worry, or just a deep unsettledness weighs on the soul. Sleep might come, but true peace feels far away. If that describes you right now, the story of Ruth offers powerful hope.
In Ruth chapter 3, we find a young widow in desperate circumstances, and through her story, God shows us how He brings REST to weary souls.
Naomi’s Loving Initiative
“Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, ‘My daughter, should I not seek REST for you, that it may be well with you?’” (Ruth 3:1)
Naomi, having lost her husband and sons, looks at her daughter-in-law Ruth and sees her exhaustion. Ruth is a young widow, an immigrant from Moab (a people disliked in Israel), and living in poverty. Her daily concerns are basic survival: Will I make it through the night? Will I have food tomorrow?
Naomi takes action. She instructs Ruth to prepare herself, approach Boaz (a relative and potential redeemer) at the threshing floor, and humbly request his covering and protection.
Ruth responds with beautiful obedience and humility: “All that you say I will do.” She follows Naomi’s instructions, uncovering Boaz’s feet as a sign of respect and submission, then lying down at his feet.
When Boaz awakens and hears her request—“Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer”—he responds with blessing, protection, and provision.
The Weight of Weariness
Ruth’s story resonates because many of us carry similar burdens:
Weariness in marriage
Overwhelming responsibilities as a parent
Financial struggles
Career stress and difficult bosses
Health challenges
The emotional toll of loss or uncertainty
In my own life, my wife Lynita and I went through a season of terrible jobs and bad bosses. We’d come home and take out our exhaustion on each other. That weariness spilled into our relationship. Many couples and families experience this same dynamic.
The temptation in hard seasons is to isolate. But God designed us for community. He works through people. Naomi played a crucial role in Ruth’s story, and Ruth found her redeemer through that relationship.
A Word to Husbands
To the men: Your wife needs security. Ladies, is that true? When a woman feels safe and provided for, it brings rest to her soul. As husbands, we have the responsibility to create a home where our wives can lay their heads down at night without fear about tomorrow.
When I officiate weddings, I remind the groom that he is now responsible for the daughter her parents have raised. They should be able to rest knowing he will do whatever it takes to care for her.
Boaz Points to Jesus
Boaz is a beautiful picture of Christ, our Redeemer. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Many of us struggle with the idea of taking on a yoke because we’re already carrying too much. But Jesus isn’t asking us to switch yokes—He’s inviting us to share His. Instead of pulling alone, we walk alongside Him. He carries the weight.
The weariness we feel often comes from trying to do life solo. Jesus invites us into partnership with Him.
Experiencing Soul Rest Through Faith
Hebrews 4 reminds us that God’s promise of rest still stands. The Israelites missed the Promised Land because of unbelief. We enter rest the same way Ruth did—through active faith.
Naomi told Ruth to wash, anoint herself, and prepare. For us, that looks like:
Being washed by God’s Word
Repentance and a renewed mind
Taking active steps of obedience
Bringing our burdens to Jesus in prayer
Rest comes not from passive belief, but from active trust—laying our situations at Jesus’ feet and allowing Him to lead.
You Are Not Alone
If you’re in a season of weariness today, hear this: You are not alone.
God sees you. He cares. He works through community, and most importantly, He offers soul-deep rest through Jesus Christ.
My challenge to you is:
If you’re weary, don’t go it alone.
Reach out to trusted believers.
Most importantly, come to Jesus.
He is the King of Peace. He wants to give you rest—not just physical, but the kind that settles deep in your soul.
Prayer for you today:
Lord, for every person carrying weariness, bring Your rest. Cover them with Your wings. Be their Redeemer. Give them peace that surpasses understanding. Help them to stop striving alone and to take Your yoke upon them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
